Hope – the inflatable life-size humpback whale

Meet the newest member of WDC, our life-size inflatable whale called Hope! Hope measures 13m long and 8m wide, similar to a real-life humpback whale.

She also looks like a real-life humpback whale both outside and inside. Going inside Hope gives you the opportunity to learn about the internal anatomy of humpback whales, from breathing to feeding as well as the impact of plastic pollution.

Are you interested in hosting a visit by Hope at your school or event? Based in Moray, we would be happy to arrange to bring Hope to your school or event where possible. We will also be making trips to other areas in Scotland, though please note, visits to your area may not occur regularly. Please get in touch to find out about any trips to your area and register your interest in a visit.

An indoor space is essential for hosting Hope. Minimum space requirements are 15m x 9m, plus an electricity supply.

Suitable sessions for all ages. We take small groups of up to 10 pupils inside the whale according to a pre agreed schedule with each school. We are happy to work with you on this, so you get the most out of the visit.

To enquire about a visit from Hope, please contact our Education coordinator Lorna Hall by emailing [email protected] or ringing our office on 01343 820339. Download our poster with more details.

We can also attend public events with Hope if a suitable indoor space is available – please send all enquiries to [email protected].

What do schools say about Hope?

Sunnyside School for Conservation:
‘We were delighted to have Hope come and visit our school.
Both Lorna and Abbie were amazing on both days, engaging, adapting, and working with a range of our pupils including some with special educational needs, our infants and right up to our senior pupils.
We have many visitors, but both ladies shone as knowing their facts, their audience and how to pitch and keep the children’s interest throughout their visit.’

Govan high school:
‘The pupils and staff all really enjoyed it, and it was a fantastic day – I have never seen quite so many people finding an excuse to come into the assembly hall for a look!
The worksheets were good for the young people and the actual experience itself was really interesting.
Thank you again for helping to bring to the school and giving our young people this experience.’

Thank you to the Sandhu family, in memory of Avtar, and Deloitte, for their support for this project.
